Although traditional framed residential structures provide a high level of life safety during an earthquake, their vulnerability to damage can be very costly. After the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, it was estimated that $20 billion were issued in insurance payouts for damaged residences. In addition, over 60,000 people were displaced from their homes for a significant period of time.
